- The 13 October gazette published the Labour Directorate’s resolution of 8 October with the 2027 public holidays.
- Catalonia will have 12 holidays; 1 May, the Diada and Christmas fall on a Saturday, and 15 August and St Stephen’s Day on a Sunday.
- The Mondays 1 November and 6 December make two long weekends, and Maundy Thursday is not a holiday in Catalonia.
The Official State Gazette of Tuesday 13 October 2026 published the 8 October resolution of the Directorate-General of Labour with the list of 2027 public holidays notified by the seventeen autonomous communities and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla. It includes the national, regional and the two autonomous cities’ holidays; to these are added up to two local holidays per municipality, published in the regional or provincial bulletins.
The calendar is a management tool: it determines deadlines, shifts, deliveries and holidays. With time to plan, a company can organise closures, on-call duties and bridge days in advance, and it must draw up and display its own work calendar in a visible place at the workplace, as the Workers’ Statute requires, and communicate it to staff in good time.
Holidays in Catalonia
According to the published list, the 2027 holidays in Catalonia are 1 January (Friday), 6 January (Wednesday), 26 March (Good Friday), 29 March (Easter Monday, except in the Vall d’Aran, which replaces it with 17 June), 1 May (Saturday), 24 June (Thursday, St John), 11 September (Saturday, Diada), 12 October (Tuesday), 1 November (Monday), 6 December (Monday), 8 December (Wednesday) and 25 December (Saturday). Maundy Thursday, a holiday in most of the country, is not one in Catalonia.
Three holidays fall on a Saturday, and 15 August and St Stephen’s Day, on 26 December, on a Sunday, so there is no extra holiday. St John’s, falling on a Thursday, is the one that lends itself most to a bridge in Catalonia, according to the press. In December, anyone who takes Tuesday 7 off will chain five days of rest, from Saturday 4 to Wednesday 8.
What the rule says
Royal Decree 2001/1983 distinguishes between national holidays that the autonomous communities cannot replace and those that can be replaced, such as Epiphany, which no community has changed in 2027. When a national holiday falls on a Sunday, like 15 August, some communities move it to the following Monday, the 16th; Catalonia does not. The Workers’ Statute sets a maximum of fourteen holidays a year, two of them local.
Holidays falling on a Saturday raise the question of whether they give a right to additional rest. This is usually settled by the applicable collective agreement or by each company’s own calendar; failing that, consult your employment adviser before fixing the calendar, especially for staff on rotating shifts or Monday-to-Saturday schedules.
Practical steps
It is worth cross-checking the regional calendar with the local holidays of each workplace, which are published in other bulletins, and with the closing days of suppliers, customers and administrations. Until the two local holidays of each municipality are known, the company’s calendar should be treated as provisional.
Payment and collection deadlines and due dates falling near the holiday Mondays of 1 November and 6 December should also be reviewed, because depending on the contract or the applicable rule they may move to the next working day. An internal calendar shared with staff before year-end avoids disputes over holidays and bridge days.
Planning the year with the calendar in hand is cheaper than improvising.
